This catechism is a series of questions and answers on the U.S. Constitution intended to help the reader learn about our founding document and in turn the legacy it holds.

John Jay, original Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court and an author of The Federalist Papers, wisely recommended:

Every member of the State ought diligently to read and study the constitution of his country….By knowing their rights, they will sooner perceive when they are violated and be the better prepared to defend and assert them.

Our Constitution, rooted in timeless principles, has transcended diverse generations, and the overwhelming majority of its content has remained unaltered since the time it was written. This work was originally published in 1828 as Elementary Catechism on the Constitution of the United States for the Use of Schools by Arthur Stansbury. Since it was published, 15 amendments have been added to the Constitution, so the modern editors have therefore updated a few answers as necessary.
